ANTHROPOLOGY 1AB3: Critical Thinking Assignment Two – Worth 25%

Objectives: To engage in critical thinking; to develop your research and writing skills; to investigate and discuss a topic related to the field of anthropology.

DUE: at the beginning of class on March 20. You must submit a hard copy in class for it to be counted ON TIME.

Format: 1300-1500 words in essay format, with full paragraphs. Note: This word count does NOT include your References Cited page or the title page. There is a 20% PENALTY for going over the 1500 word limit. Include a title page with your name, student number, and your TA’s name on the front. There is no SPECIFIC penalty for being under the word limit, but note that papers that are under the word limit may suffer from poor or undeveloped content. So in other words, your content mark may suffer.

Use 12 point Times New Roman font and double space your essay. The References Cited page should be single spaced.

Citation Style: You need a References Cited (Bibliography) and in-text citations. Use AAA style with in-text citations and a Reference List. Because you are only using the course text book (no external research), your References Cited will look like this:

Author Last Name, Author First Name 2013 Title of the Chapter from the text that you used. In: Race, Identity and Power. Anthropology 1AB3, Custom Second Edition for McMaster University. Toronto: Pearson Education.

If you cite information from multiple chapters, then they need to be listed separately in your References Cited page.
Your in-text citations will look like this: (Author 2013:page). For example, if you cite from chapter 1, then do it like this: (Author 2013:page).
A PDF with details for references is available at: http://www.aaanet.org/publications/style_guide.pdf

You will submit your essay at the BEGINNING of class on MARCH 20. Note that the late penalty is 10% off for each 24-hour period you are late, up to 72 hours late. Late assignments must be submitted online on Avenue. Note that only LATE assignments can be accepted online.

The Assignment:
You are assigned a question based on your LAST name. You must respond to the question that you are assigned. Failure to respond to your ASSIGNED question will result in a 0. You must find and read two PEER REVIEWED anthropology journal articles on your topic and answer the question assigned to you. See the powerpoint on Avenue for info on how to find peer reviewed anthropology journal articles.

YOU MAY NOT USE ANY ADDITIONAL SOURCES except for the textbook for 1AB3, or any other relevant course material. You may not use more than two journal articles.

Assigned Reading and TA Information:
Please answer the question that you have been assigned. Note: When answering your question, contextualize your response within larger themes in lectures and in your text…in other words, use the text! Don’t just use the pages below to respond to your question. Make use of key course themes and issues.

Question:
Find two anthropological, peer reviewed journal articles that discuss EITHER how surrogate motherhood OR fertility treatments are understood within two different cultural contexts. Read them. Then, answer this question: how is the seemingly “unnatural” practice (of surrogacy or fertility treatments) naturalized in each case? In other words, how are these practices made to conform to existing ideas about family relationships?
Structure of your Essay:
Your essay should have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion that emphasize the most important points of your essay. A conclusion should not be a repetition of sentences from the main body of your paper, but rather is a synthesis of the main points.

Statement on Academic Dishonesty Academic Dishonesty consists of misrepresentation by deception or by other fraudulent means and can result in serious consequences, Eg. the grade of zero on an assignment, loss of credit with a notation on the transcript (notation reads: “Grade of F assigned for academic dishonesty”), and/or suspension or expulsion from the university.
It is your responsibility to understand what constitutes academic dishonesty. For information on the various kinds of academic dishonesty, please refer to the Academic Integrity Policy, Appendix 3, www.mcmaster.ca/senate/academic/ac_integrity.htm

In general: your paper should address and answer the question. The essay makes an interpretation of the question and develops a coherent argument. You should also demonstrate knowledge of key concepts, facts, and relevant examples discussed in class and in other areas of the text.
