principles of statistics
Question 1.
An authority in charge of road safety is interested in what determines car
preferences in men and women of various age categories and with various licensing histories.
The authority has commissioned a survey which collected data on 300 respondents, including
their AGE (in years), GENDER (0 – female, 1 – male), how long they have been fully licensed =
YRSLIC (0
;

;:::
)+ MTSLIC (0
;

;:::;
11), FACTOR (1=safety, 2=reliability, 3=cost, 4=per-
formance, 5=comfort, 6=looks) that is most important for them when buying a car. The data
are available in Moodle as Data for Question 1 of the examination project.
Devise a method of illustrating the data in a way that will be helpful to the authority.
You can look at possible dependence of FACTOR on GENDER, AGE, and duration of license,
and use any graphical descriptions of the data (boxplots, histograms, tables etc.) that you
feel are relevant, subject to the overall space restriction on your project. Only the most basic
calculations (if any) are expected.
Question 2.
A derivative trader assumed the following simple theory of daily movements
of the stock market. He believed that during the day the market rises with probability 0
:
5 and
falls with probability 0
:
5. Another theory assumption is that the market movement during the
day is independent of movements of previous days. Trading strategies based on this simple
theory resulted in big losses and the trader decided to test the theory. He carried out a survey
of the daily movements of stock prices as measured by the FTSE index. The survey covered
150 weeks, each with 5 trading days, and the numbers of weeks having various numbers of day’s
rises are shown in the table below

Given a particular week let
X
be a number of days when the market rises. What is the
distribution of
X
under the simple theory? Explain in detail. Carry out a goodness-of-t test
to examine whether the data t this distribution.
Question 3.
It has been decided to test whether there is any dierence in strength between
a new brand and an old brand of concrete . 20 measurements were made for the old brand, and
20 measurements were made for the new brand respectively. The results of tests (in lbs) are
available in Moodle as Data for Question 3 of the examination project. Use Minitab to perform
the statistical analysis whether there is any dierence between the strength of the new brand
and the strength of the old one. If you nd out that there is a dierence, then explain which
brand you would recommend.
Finally, you are reminded of this section of the Undergraduate Handbook.
7.5 Plagiarism. Denition of plagiarism
“Plagiarism” means the presentation of another person’s work in any quantity without ad-
equately identifying it and citing its source in a way which is consistent with good scholarly
practice in the discipline and commensurate with the level of professional conduct expected
from the student. The source which is plagiarised may take any form (including words, graphs
and images, musical texts, data, source code, ideas or judgments) and may exist in any pub-
lished or unpublished medium, including the Internet. Plagiarism may occur in any piece of
work presented by a student, including examination scripts, although standards for citation of
sources may vary dependent on the method of assessment. Group working would constitute
plagiarism where the discipline or the method of assessment emphasises independent study and
collective ideas are presented as uniquely those of the individual submitting the work. Identi-
fying plagiarism is a matter of expert academic judgment, based on a comparison across the
student’s work and on knowledge of sources, practices and expectations for professional conduct
in the discipline. Therefore it is possible to determine that an oense has occurred from an
assessment of the student’s work alone, without reference to further evidence.
