Language Acquisition

Language Acquisition

Consider two hypothetical, equally intelligent students. Both students arrived in this country at the same age (7 years old), in September of the 2nd grade. Both were equally well educated in their home country. Both students have very similar home situations. Both students are taught by the same good teacher using the best methods for language acquisition.
In other words, both students share very close ENVIRONMENTAL circumstances.
Both students are progressing in the target language, but one is progressing faster than the other. After 1 year (in 3rd grade), one student is exited from ESL, and the other continues in ESL. After one additional year (in 4th grade) the second student is exited from ESL.

MANY YEARS PASS BY. BOTH students continue in the same schools, with the same good teachers.
What are your expectations for their ORAL proficiency in the target language (English) by the time they are both SENIORS IN HIGH SCHOOL? Describe their ORAL abilities in English at that time—as high school seniors. How does the CP play a role in their predicted attainment in ORAL LANGUAGE by senior year in high school?
