Purpose: To determine how the type of writing in your genre is structured.

For your second assignment in this class, you will classify the genre you’re looking at. To do this, you will need to look closely at two new articles, and you will think about them in the context of what you’ve learned about your first article. Since you’re already familiar with one article in the genre, you’ll be able to spot similarities and differences in your two new articles. Making this comparison will help you identify which style attributes are integral to the genre.

You might begin by asking yourself these questions:
•   What attributes do you see appearing in all three texts?
o   Do the texts all use the same organization? The same types of evidence? The same type of language?
•   What would change about the texts’ communication if you removed one of these attributes?
o   Would it be less clear? Less convincing? More subjective?
•   What attributes are essential for the text to fulfill its intended purpose?
o   See if you can imagine an unsuccessful text in this genre. What would it include? What would it leave out?
•   Is variation possible in this genre? That is, do texts employ various styles to achieve the same goal? (Think about all the different handshakes Chiarella details)

Before submitting, ask yourself:
?   Have you focused on attributes that are essential to the genre, not just common to it?
?   Have you incorporated evidence from all three sources?
?   Does your evidence focus on how these sources communicate?
